British photographer Lorraine Haan-Stewart first entered the world of photography 20 years ago when she went to work at the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain. As an RPS exhibitions assistant in such a highly stimulating and creative environment she was able to get a unique perspective of photography, watch master photographers at work, and be actively involved in all areas of the photographic process. “Those formative years at the RPS made me the photographer I am today. I was ready to learn, soaking up all the tips and advice that photographers kindly gave me. Meeting some of the big names in photography and seeing their work up close was very inspirational and set the standard for me. I am always striving to perfect my technique yet open to new ideas and styles because I am curious by nature. I will never tire of photography as there is always something, or someone, I haven’t photographed yet.”

Since then, and with many life changes along the way, she is now based in Texas, USA where her passion for her art is as strong as ever. Known more for her atmospheric black & white floral images she is making the most of the digital age by venturing into the world of color. “Most of my work is in black & white as it is usually more in-keeping with the look I want to achieve with my subject. However, if the use of colour is more appropriate, like a dramatic sunset for example, I will capture the image in colour. Whether I am taking photographs of flowers, products or people, in B&W or colour, I approach my subject with the same amount of energy and enthusiasm. Getting the setting right, manipulating the lighting and creating the right ‘mood’ is a lengthy process, but when I finally press that button and hear that click, it’s a great feeling.”

Since her move to Texas three years ago Lorraine has been busy exhibiting her work and continues to make great strides in her career. Earlier this year she was approached by the British magazine ‘Digital Photographer’ who published her photographs of smoke in their October issue. She has work showing at various locations in the Dallas/ Fort Worth metroplex* and following her success on entering a competition by NYLO Hotels, her floral photographs will be adorning the corridors of the newly built NYLO Hotel in Plano Texas, which is a remarkable achievement considering there were over 500 submissions!

True to her humble beginnings, Lorraine has not forgotten her roots and still maintains a strong link with the Royal Photographic Society where was recently awarded the Licentiate distinction by the Fellows of the Society.
